A cracked or broken tooth may be painful, sensitive or surprisingly quiet. The extent of damage cannot be determined reliably without a dental examination.
What to do now
ADA emergency guidance advises rinsing the mouth with warm water and using a cold compress on the face if swelling is present. Arrange dental evaluation as soon as possible.
Tell the dentist
- How and when the tooth broke.
- Whether a piece of tooth is missing.
- Whether there is pain, sensitivity, bleeding or swelling.
- Whether the tooth feels loose or out of position.
General emergency guidance on this site is informed by patient education from the American Dental Association's MouthHealthy program and the American Association of Endodontists. It is educational and does not replace an examination by a dentist.
