Why an exam matters
An abscess can have different causes and treatment depends on the source and severity. Antibiotics are not a substitute for definitive dental treatment in many tooth-related infections; a dentist needs to determine what is appropriate.
Call and describe
- Where the swelling is located.
- Whether it is increasing.
- Whether you have fever, malaise or difficulty swallowing.
- Whether a particular tooth is painful or tender.
